SWEDISH EARLY 1900S OFF-WHITE COTTON PIQUÉ LAPELLED SUMMER WAISTCOAT. SIZE CA EU 44-46 (US/UK 34-36)

DESCRIPTION

This waistcoat bears no label, so its origin cannot be established with complete certainty. However, we believe it was most likely tailored in Sweden during the early decades of the 20th century. It is made from off-white cotton piqué. The fabric features a small repeating pattern of tiny red dots, spaced approximately one centimetre apart.

The waistcoat is single-breasted and fastens with seven buttons – a rather unusual number, although this is naturally due to the high fastening typical of the period. It is fitted with fine, thin mother-of-pearl buttons, all of which are intact. It is worth noting that one of the buttons is a replacement. It is very similar to the others and not immediately noticeable, but upon closer inspection it can be seen to have a slightly whiter tone. The waistcoat has four front pockets – two at chest height and two lower down – and features lapels. At the back is an adjustment buckle for altering the fit.

The overall condition is good, although a closer inspection reveals a few minor flaws. There is a faint stain on the front, while a more noticeable stain is present on the back near the adjustment buckle. It is possible that these could be improved with further cleaning, although this is not something we can guarantee. There is also slight discolouration around the armholes, as well as a very small hole in the fabric on one shoulder. All of these imperfections are carefully documented in the photographs.
