A Brief History of the Chrysler Airstream
Introduced in 1935, the Chrysler Airstream was Chrysler’s response to the lukewarm reception of their revolutionary Airflow model. While the Airflow was a bold step forward in automotive design - with its aerodynamic body and innovative engineering - it proved too radical for the average car buyer of the time.
The Airstream, by contrast, was a more traditionally styled vehicle, offering many of the mechanical advancements of the Airflow but wrapped in a more familiar and conservative design. Built as a stopgap measure to recover sales, the Airstream was available in various body styles and came equipped with Chrysler's reliable straight-six and straight-eight engines.
Produced only in 1935 and 1936, the Airstream quickly gained popularity and significantly outsold the Airflow, helping to stabilise Chrysler’s position in the market during a difficult economic period. Today, the Airstream stands as a fascinating example of the tension between innovation and public taste in the early automotive industry.
A Well-Preserved Example with a Personal History
Our particular example was originally purchased new by an architect named Herman C. Witte, who lived in Seattle, Washington. At the time of purchase, he was 45 years old and the father of four children. The car cost $1,127, and he paid in full. All of this is known thanks to the original documentation that accompanies the car, providing a rare and detailed insight into its provenance and journey through time.
In 1990, the vehicle made its way to Sweden, imported by a dedicated car collector. Over the following 30 years, the Airstream remained in his possession and was driven only sparingly - preserved with great care. A few years ago, we had the honour of taking over the stewardship of this remarkable automobile.
