DESCRIPTION
This coat is most likely of Norwegian origin. At the very least, the cloth is, as it comes from Gudbrandsdalens Uldvarefabrik in Lillehammer, a well-known textile manufacturer that supplied a large amount of suiting and overcoat fabrics during the 1940s and 1950s. It is also very likely that the coat itself was made in Norway, and it was probably tailor-made. There are no other labels present apart from that of the cloth manufacturer. The fabric is dark grey with a suitably subtle herringbone pattern.
The coat is double-breasted with three rows of buttons. It features horizontal patch pockets at the front with substantial pocket flaps, and there is a buttonhole in each lapel. The back is straight and has a high vent. The cuffs are finished with a single button.
Looking at the inside of the coat, the workmanship is very fine. In fact, the interior construction is more reminiscent of coats from the 1920s and 1930s in terms of the care with which it has been made. There is a large inside pocket on each side. The upper part of the lining is quilted.
The overall condition is good, although there are a few minor damages to the cloth that become visible upon close inspection. These are present, among other places, on the collar and on the right sleeve. It should be noted, however, that all of these are small and do not affect the overall appearance when the coat is worn. All of these flaws are documented in the photographs, so please study the images carefully and form your own opinion regarding the condition.
SIZE
The size is another factor suggesting that the coat was probably tailor-made. It has an elongated cut, roughly corresponding to a modern EU 46 Long (UK/US 36L). We believe the wearer should be at least 180 cm tall in order to carry this coat well. Please scroll down for the full set of measurements.
