NORWEGIAN 1930S/1940S BROWN CHALK STRIPE PLUS FOURS SUIT. SIZE CA EU 48 (US/UK 38)

DESCRIPTION

This suit bears no maker's label, but we have good reason to believe that it is of Norwegian origin. It is tailored from a brown chalk stripe cloth, a fabric very much typical of the period. The somewhat unusual combination of a double-breasted jacket and plus fours leads us to suspect that the trousers were altered at some point in their history, and that they were originally full-length trousers. The scale and pattern of the cloth also support this theory.

The jacket is double-breasted with three rows of buttons, two of which are functional. It features jetted horizontal hip pockets and a breast pocket. The left lapel has a buttonhole, while the cuffs are finished with three buttons. The back is plain, with no vent. The interior is fully lined and fitted with a single inside pocket on the right-hand side.

The trousers feature double forward pleats, vertically cut side pockets set into the side seams, belt loops, and a button fly. Buttons for braces are fitted to the inside of the waistband. The leg openings are fitted with adjustable buckle fastenings to ensure a close fit around the calf. At the rear are two pockets, one on each side.

In terms of condition, the suit shows signs of wear, although the overall impression remains good. The most noticeable wear is to the cloth beneath the arms, together with a few small areas of damage to the outer fabric. There is also some light discolouration to the lining, as well as a few areas of wear to the trouser lining. All flaws have been carefully documented in the photographs. The suit corresponds approximately to a modern EU 48 (UK/US 38). Unfortunately, there is no additional material available in the trouser waistband, so it is important that the waist fits comfortably from the outset and is not too small.
