BRITISH 1930S/1940S THREE PIECE CHECKERED BROWN TWEED SUIT. SIZE CA EU 46 (US/UK36)

DESCRIPTION

This suit is, by all appearances, of British origin. It stands out in certain ways, and its exact date is not entirely clear. It appears to have been tailor-made sometime during the 1930s or 1940s, although it cannot be ruled out that it is a few years later. It is made from a heavy brown tweed fabric in a herringbone pattern with a large overcheck — a very British cloth. The suit features a number of unusual details, which we will return to below.

The jacket is single-breasted and fastens with three buttons. It has horizontal front pockets with flaps, as well as a breast pocket. There is a buttonhole on the left lapel. The cuffs are finished with three buttons. The back is straight and closed, with no vent. Internally, it is fully lined and has two inside pockets, one on each side, positioned at slightly different heights.

The waistcoat is single-breasted and fastens with six buttons. It has four front pockets, two at chest height and two lower down. The waistcoat has an unusual detail on the front: there is a stitched opening above the upper right pocket, the purpose of which is unclear. At the back, the waistcoat features an adjustable strap for sizing.

The trousers are very classic in style, with a high waist, double forward pleats, and brace buttons on the outside of the waistband. They have vertical front pockets and a zip fly. The hems are turned up. On the reverse, they feature a fishtail back and a single back pocket on the right-hand side with a button fastening.

Finally, regarding condition, we come to another unusual detail. Overall, the condition is very good, but there is a significant repair on the right leg. This repair has been very skilfully executed, and it may take a moment to notice what lies behind the additional seam around knee height. It relates to a previous damage that has been addressed with a repair incorporating this seam. There are also some other minor defects, primarily discolouration to the lining across all three pieces. The rear brace buttons are mismatched. All defects are carefully documented in the photographs, and the suit has been priced with its condition in mind. In size, it corresponds roughly to a modern EU 46 (UK/US 36) overall. However, there is a slight variation between the pieces: the waistcoat and jacket are somewhat smaller than the trousers.
