DESCRIPTION

This is perhaps the style of suit most closely associated with the 1940s, and to some extent the 1930s - a classic American double-breasted grey chalk stripe suit. It was originally sold by Holt's in Miles City, Montana, sometime during the 1940s. Inside the sole inside pocket is a Union Label, which allows the garment to be dated with a fairly high degree of accuracy.

As mentioned, the jacket is double-breasted with three rows of buttons, two of which are functional. It features jetted horizontal hip pockets and a breast pocket. Each of the wide lapels has a buttonhole, while the cuffs are finished with two buttons. The back is plain, without a vent. In typical American fashion, the jacket is half-lined and has a single inside pocket on the right-hand side.

The trousers feature double forward pleats, belt loops, and buttons for braces. They have vertically cut side pockets following the side seams and a zip fly. A small coin pocket is positioned just below the waistband on the right-hand side. At the rear are two pockets, one on each side, with the left pocket fastening with a button.

Overall, the suit presents well, although closer inspection reveals a number of minor imperfections. Some of these are concealed when the suit is worn, while others remain visible. There are several areas of light discolouration to the outer fabric. These are not particularly severe, but they are present. It is possible that some could be improved with further professional cleaning, although we cannot guarantee this. The most significant flaw is a repair to the front of one lapel. This is concealed when the jacket is fastened but becomes visible when worn open. There are also several less noticeable imperfections, including some discolouration to the lining that cannot be seen when the suit is being worn. In addition, the trousers have a few areas of wear and an occasional repair.
