SWEDISH 1959 BLUE-GREY STRIPED DOUBLE BREASTED BESPOKE SUIT BY NICKOLLS. SIZE CA EU 52-54 (US/UK 42-44)

DESCRIPTION

This two-piece suit was tailored at Nickolls in 1959. Nickolls was a centrally located tailoring establishment in Stockholm. The suit is made from a greyish-blue cloth with alternating darker and lighter stripes – a fabric very characteristic of the period.

The jacket is double-breasted and has three rows of buttons, of which two are used. The lapels are relatively narrow for a double-breasted jacket and have no buttonholes, which is also typical of the period. It has horizontal front pockets with welt openings and a breast pocket. At the back, it is straight and closed, with no vents. The cuffs have working buttonholes, as is often the case with tailored jackets. Note the detail that only the two lower buttonholes are functional – this was customary on Swedish jackets. This can be compared with, for example, British jackets, where it is generally possible to open all the cuff buttons. Internally, the jacket is fully lined and has three inside pockets: one large pocket on each side, plus an additional, slightly smaller pocket on the left, perhaps intended for a pen or even a cigar.

The trousers have double pleats and slightly slanted front pockets. They have belt loops, while inside the waistband there are buttons for braces. The fly has a button fastening. At the back, there is a welt pocket on the right-hand side. The trousers also bear a label indicating the date of delivery – March 1959.

The overall condition is good, although not perfect. We will go through the defects that are present. There is some damage to the cloth on the lapel. This is not particularly noticeable when viewing the suit as a whole, but can be seen upon closer inspection. There is also a repair just above the breast pocket, which is similarly unobtrusive. This area can, however, easily be concealed by wearing a pocket square. The trousers have mismatched buttons on the fly. These are, of course, not visible when the trousers are worn, but they can easily be replaced if desired to make them uniform. There is also a small area of discolouration on the trousers. Again, this is not particularly noticeable at first inspection, but it is nevertheless present. It may be possible to remove it with further cleaning. Please study the photographs carefully and form your own opinion of the condition.
