DESCRIPTION
This suit bears no labels, but is in all likelihood of Swedish origin. It was made sometime in the early 1900s, meaning it is over 100 years old — and it remains in remarkably fine condition. It is tailored from a black wool fabric, typical of the period.
The jacket is single-breasted and fastens with three covered buttons. It features horizontal front pockets with flaps and a breast pocket that slopes slightly inwards, which is characteristic of the era. The left lapel has a buttonhole. The cuffs are finished with two covered buttons. The back is straight and closed, with no vent. Internally, it is fully lined and has two inner pockets of different styles: the right is a traditional horizontal pocket, while the left is a vertical pocket concealed within the lining seam.
The waistcoat is single-breasted and fastens with five covered buttons. It has two low-set front pockets. At the back, there is an adjuster buckle for fit. The interior is lined with a striped cotton fabric.
The trousers are typical of the period in all details, featuring a high waist without pleats, brace buttons on the outside of the waistband, and vertical front pockets. They have a button fly. At the back, they feature a so-called fishtail, meaning the waistband is split at the centre back seam.
As mentioned, the overall condition is exceptionally good considering the suit is over 100 years old. The only issues we have noted are some minor discolouration in the lining across all three pieces. The only visible damage consists of a few holes high up at the neck in the back lining of the waistcoat. Please study the images carefully and form your own opinion of the condition.
SIZE
The measurements suggest that the suit was bespoke, made for a specific individual. The jacket falls between an EU 46 LONG (US/UK 36L) and EU 48 LONG (US/UK 38L) based on the chest measurement. The waistcoat, on the other hand, is slightly larger, corresponding to a modern EU 50 (US/UK 40); it can, of course, be adjusted using the buckle at the back.
As for the trousers, they fall between an EU 48 LONG (US/UK 38L) and EU 50 (US/UK 40) based on the waist measurement, noting that this measurement is taken with the back adjuster fully extended.
In summary, the suit will fit best on someone between an EU 46 LONG (US/UK 36L) and EU 48 LONG (US/UK 38L). Please scroll down for exact measurements and seam allowances.
