DESCRIPTION
This checked waistcoat was almost certainly not part of a three-piece suit but was instead originally tailored as an odd vest. It features a label dated 1938 along with the name of its first owner – a Swedish lawyer. An interesting detail is that the label is partially written in Italian, with "dato" instead of the Swedish "datum". However, we still believe it was tailored in Sweden, and the use of Italian on the label is likely due to other, unknown reasons. The title "advokat" (lawyer) is written in Swedish.
The fabric is a classic tattersall pattern with brown checks on a cream-coloured base, made from a heavy wool cloth. The waistcoat is single-breasted with six buttons down the front. It has four front pockets – two at chest level and two lower ones – all with substantial flaps. The back is cut straight and lacks an adjuster, which is typical for bespoke waistcoats. The interior is lined but does not include any inner pockets.
The condition is excellent overall, with one exception: there is noticeable discolouration in the underarm area. However, this is not visible when the waistcoat is worn and doesn’t detract from the overall impression. On the outside, it’s very fresh – one of the finest examples of its kind from this period that we’ve come across. Please see the photos and judge the condition for yourself.
