DESCRIPTION
This leather coat bears only a single label — a small tag at the neck depicting a figure wearing a leather hood and racing goggles — a clear indication of its intended original use. We haven’t encountered this label before, so it’s difficult to say anything definitive about its maker. However, it appears to be Swedish and, judging by the silhouette, very likely dates to the 1920s.
The coat is double-breasted and fastens with five rows of buttons. At the top of the collar, there is a hook-and-eye closure for fastening all the way up. It features horizontal front pockets and a belted waist at the back, along with a vent. The coat is fully lined, and the cuffs are fitted with internal elastic to prevent dust and dirt from entering the sleeves during travel.
Considering its age and type, the condition of the coat is excellent. That said, there are some signs of wear. The lining has a few holes, and the leather shows minor damage in places — though this contributes to a desirable patina and does not detract from the overall impression when worn. One point to note is that a button is missing from the topmost row; however, this button is not used when fastening the coat, and the collar completely covers its position, making it neither a functional nor visual issue. As the buttons are original, we have chosen not to replace them just for this detail. The leather has been carefully treated by us to ensure the coat will last for many more years. Sweden had a prominent leather industry during the first half of the 20th century, largely concentrated in Malung, in the province of Dalarna. Some of that heritage can be found here with us in the form of leather jackets in various styles, often made from goatskin. The high level of craftsmanship and the quality of the leather are distinctive features of garments from this period.
