DESCRIPTION
This overcoat is of American origin and was produced sometime during the 1950s by Hart Schaffner & Marx, one of the most classic American menswear manufacturers of the 20th century.
It is made from a heavy wool fabric — unusually heavy for an American coat — and in feel it is more reminiscent of a contemporary Northern European overcoat. It has a rich blue tone, and the cloth features a large-scale check in a lighter shade of blue. The pattern is quite subtle, however, and only becomes apparent upon closer inspection.
The coat is double-breasted and fastens with three rows of buttons, plus an additional button at the neck should one wish to fasten it all the way up. It has slanted, almost vertical front pockets, and there is a buttonhole on each lapel. The back is straight-cut with a single vent. The cuffs feature decorative turn-ups with buttons.
Looking at the interior, the coat presents itself more clearly as American in character, being half-lined in the typical American manner. It has one inside pocket on the left-hand side. In addition to the maker’s and cloth supplier’s labels, there is also a union label sewn into the inside pocket.
The coat is in excellent condition overall, apart from a few small areas of damage to the fabric. These are located on the shoulder, the back, and one sleeve. All are clearly documented in the photographs. Please study the images and form your own view as to the condition.
SIZE
It is evident that this coat was made for a tall individual; one would likely need to be around 190 cm (6'3") or taller for the pockets and other proportions to sit correctly. The chest measurement corresponds to an EU 50 (UK/US 40), and it may therefore be described as an EU 50 LONG (UK/US 40 LONG). Please scroll down for the exact measurements.
