DESCRIPTION
This jacket is approximately 150 years old. It bears no label, so its exact origin cannot be determined with certainty, but we do know that it comes from northern Sweden. Jackets of this type - featuring a high fastening, prominent contrast piping, and a rounded front hem - were common for several decades during the second half of the 19th century. They frequently appear in portrait photographs from this period.
While black was by far the most common colour, this example is rendered in a beautiful midnight blue. It is tailored in a substantial, period-correct wool fabric.
The jacket is single-breasted with a notably high fastening, closing with five buttons. It features horizontal front pockets with flaps and a breast pocket on the left side. On the right side, just above the lower pocket, there is a small coin/watch pocket. Contrasting piping runs along all outer edges, including around the cuffs just above the sleeve ends. The interior is lined with a heavy large-check cotton fabric and includes an inside pocket on the right side.
When assessing the condition, the garment’s age must be taken into consideration. This is likely one of the best-preserved jackets of such age that we have ever offered, though it should not be described as flawless. There are several minor imperfections throughout. For example, there is a small tear in the lining, some wear to the buttonholes, scattered stains to the fabric, and minor moth damage. All buttons are of the same model but vary slightly in colour. We initially believed the colour variation was due to fading over time, but it appears they were simply made in slightly different shades. The piping shows some wear in places, particularly around the pockets.
Viewed as a whole, however, the jacket remains in remarkably fine condition. Most of the mentioned flaws become apparent only upon close inspection. Please study the photographs carefully and form your own assessment of the condition.
A truly rare garment - one that could just as easily belong in a museum collection.
