SWEDISH 1940S/1950S CAMEL/CHOCOLATE BROWN SMOKING GOWN. SIZE CA EU 50

DESCRIPTION

This smoking gown is completely unlabelled, but we are nevertheless confident in stating that it is of Swedish origin. Garments of this type, especially when entirely unlabelled, can be quite difficult to date, but certain details in the construction suggest that it was most likely made around 1950. It is tailored from a camel-coloured wool cloth, with the shawl collar, belt and other details in a complementary chocolate-brown tone. Both colours are echoed in the edging.

The gown has no buttons and is fastened solely by the belt, which features knotted tassels at both ends. It has large horizontal front pockets as well as a generously sized breast pocket. At the waist, there is a belt loop on each side to hold the belt in place, and the back is closed, with no vent.

With this type of smoking gown, it is not uncommon for minor signs of wear to have accumulated over the years, and this example is no exception. There is some light wear to the cloth in places – nothing serious that affects the overall impression, but worth noting nonetheless. There are also one or two small areas of discolouration, though the overall condition remains good. Some wear is visible at the very edges of the sleeve cuffs. SIZE

In terms of size, it corresponds most closely to a modern EU 50 (UK/US 40). However, garments of this type are more forgiving in fit than, for example, a tailored jacket, and it is quite possible that someone a size up or a size down would also find this coat to fit well.  Especially as this coat has no buttons at all.
