DESCRIPTION
This waistcoat has no labels, so we can’t say anything with absolute certainty about its origin. However, it is most likely of Swedish origin, and was sewn sometime in the early 20th century – possibly even slightly earlier.
It is made from a patterned fabric consisting of small grey and white checks on a black background.
The waistcoat is single-breasted, and the cut is very typical of the period, with a high buttoning stance, resulting in seven buttons down the front. It features three front pockets – one chest pocket on the left side, and two lower welt pockets. At the lower back, there is a cinch strap to adjust the fit. The interior is lined in a striped cotton fabric.
The overall condition is very good, in fact among the best we’ve seen for a patterned waistcoat of this age. That said, it is not flawless – there are two small stains on the fabric, though the pattern does a good job of concealing them. On one shoulder, the threads in one of the white checks have slightly frayed. There is also some mild discolouration in the lining at the underarms.
Nevertheless, the overall impression is very good, especially considering the age.
Please review the photos to form your own opinion of the condition.
SIZE
This waistcoat stands out for being larger than most we come across from this period. Converted to modern sizing, it corresponds roughly to a EU 52 (UK/US 42). It is also relatively long in the body, which means it could work well for someone slightly above average height. Please scroll down for exact measurements.
