SWEDISH BLACK 1940S THREE PIECE BESPOKE SUIT BY FRANZÉN & ERIKSSON. SIZE CA EU 46-48 (US/UK 36-38)

DESCRIPTION

This three-piece suit was tailored at Franzén & Eriksson, a men’s tailoring establishment in Motala that was in business from the 1920s until a few years into the 1950s. Unfortunately, there is no label apart from the one at the back of the neck. This label gives a somewhat older impression, but considering the suit as a whole, it is nevertheless most likely to have been made sometime during the second half of the 1940s. It was not uncommon for smaller tailoring establishments to use the same labels for many years, meaning that labels can sometimes be several decades older than the garments in which they are found. The suit is made from a substantial black wool cloth with a subtle twill structure.

The jacket is double-breasted and fastens with two buttons. The buttons are positioned relatively low, which was typical of the period. It has horizontal welted front pockets and a breast pocket. Each lapel has a buttonhole. The back is closed, with no vent. The jacket is fully lined and has an inside pocket on each side.

The waistcoat is single-breasted and fastens with six buttons. It has four front pockets – two at chest level and two lower down. At the back, there is a buckle for adjusting the size.

The trousers are high-waisted, with double front pleats and slightly slanted front pockets. They have a button fly, and there are buttons inside the waistband for braces. At the back, there is a pocket on each side, both with button fastening and a flap. The trouser hems have turn-ups.

The overall condition is good, although not perfect. Most of the imperfections are discolourations on the inside, the most noticeable being in the jacket sleeve lining. The pocketing is also slightly discoloured. There is also a small area of damage to the cloth near one of the fly buttons. It is positioned so that it is not visible when the trousers are worn. None of these issues can be noticed when the suit is being worn, and the overall impression is very good. Please study the photographs carefully and form your own opinion of the condition.
