DESCRIPTION

This three-piece bespoke suit is of Swedish origin, tailored in 1946 by Söderström & Son, a gentlemen’s tailor based in Örnsköldsvik on Sweden’s east coast. It is made from a dark navy fabric with a subtle herringbone pattern that becomes visible upon closer inspection.

The jacket is single-breasted and fastens with three buttons. It features horizontal front pockets with flaps, a breast pocket, and a buttonhole on the left lapel. The back is straight and closed, with no vent. Inside, it is fully lined, and the construction around the inner pocket is typical of high-quality bespoke tailoring. There is one internal pocket, located on the right side, and inside it you’ll find the tailor’s label, which includes the workshop’s name, the date – 15 June 1946 – and the name of the original owner.

The waistcoat is also single-breasted, fastening with six buttons. It has four front pockets – two at chest height and two lower ones. The back features an adjustable buckle, and the lining is made of grey silk.

The trousers are high-waisted, typical of the era, with double pleats. The braces buttons are placed on the outside of the waistband – an older, more conservative tailoring practice, as most tailors by this time had moved them to the inside. The trousers feature a button fly and vertical front pockets, with turn-ups at the hems. Turning them around reveals some charmingly old-fashioned details: a split waistband at the back (fishtail) and a rear buckle – both features more common in earlier decades. There is also a single back pocket on the right side with button closure.

In terms of condition, the overall impression is good. Upon closer inspection, some minor imperfections can be found – such as discolouration in the linings of both the jacket and waistcoat, and some light wear to the fabric in places. However, none of these affect the overall appearance.

SIZE

As this is a bespoke suit, the three pieces correspond to slightly different sizes, which is natural for a made-to-measure garment.

• The jacket measures between a modern EU 50 (UK/US 40) and EU 52 (UK/US 42) in chest width.

• The waistcoat is somewhat larger, closer to a EU 54 (UK/US 44), though it can easily be adjusted using the rear buckle or with minor tailoring.

• The trousers correspond to a EU 52 (UK/US 42).

In summary, the suit should fit well overall on someone who normally wears between EU 50 and 52 (UK/US 40–42), taking into account the potential for adjustments.
