DESCRIPTION

This frock coat set is likely among the oldest dated garments we’ve ever offered for sale. While we occasionally come across even older pieces, it is extremely rare to find such clear and early dates inside garments. This set is bespoke and dated 8th August 1908 – almost four years before the Titanic sank!

It was tailored by Oscar Wickström, a bespoke tailor based in Eksjö, a town in southern Sweden. The coat is single-breasted with three covered buttons. There is a buttonhole on the left lapel. As is typical for frock coats, the back features two buttons and a centre vent. The interior is fully lined with one inner pocket on the right side. The sleeves are lined in a striped cotton fabric.

The trousers are period-typical with a flat front (no pleats), vertical front pockets, and buttons for suspenders on the outside of the waistband. There is a coin/watch pocket on the right side just below the waistband. The fly fastens with buttons, and the back features a classic fishtail design with an adjustable strap – which also carries another tailor’s label.

Considering its impressive age, the overall condition is remarkably good. However, upon closer inspection, some minor flaws can be found. There is a small hole on one shoulder, and a few small damages to the fabric on the front of the coat. The buttonholes show some wear, and all covered buttons exhibit signs of use. The sleeve lining has some damage and one repair. The crotch lining of the trousers also has minor wear. None of these issues affect the overall appearance when the suit is worn.
