DESCRIPTION

This overcoat is of Swedish origin, sold at Schultz Herrekipering in Kristinehamn, central Sweden, sometime during the 1920s – and most likely also made there, as the premises included a tailoring workshop. The colour is a dark grey, almost bordering on black, though the contrast with the jet-black velvet collar clearly makes the coat appear grey.

The coat is double-breasted with three rows of buttons, all of which are functional. It has horizontal front pockets with flaps, and each lapel features a buttonhole. The back is straight with a vent. The shoulder seam is positioned far back, giving the shoulders a relatively soft and natural line – particularly in contrast to the more structured shoulders often seen on coats from the 1930s and 1940s. Inside, it is fully lined and has two inner pockets, one on each side. The way the lining is sewn around the pockets is highly characteristic of the period. The sleeves are lined with a striking striped fabric.

The condition is overall good, considering its age. On coats with velvet collars, it is common to see significant wear to the velvet, but this one is in near-perfect condition – so perfect, in fact, that one cannot entirely rule out the possibility that it was replaced at some point during the coat’s hundred-year history. However, a close inspection of the collar suggests it is likely original.

A closer look at the rest of the coat reveals some minor imperfections. The fabric shows slight fading in places, most noticeably on the left side. There is also some wear to the buttonholes and a few small discolourations. These issues, however, do not affect the overall impression, and the coat is perfectly wearable as it is. Please study the photos carefully and form your own opinion regarding the condition.
