DESCRIPTION
This elegant smoking jacket bears no labels, but it is most likely of Swedish origin. Smoking jackets of this type remained fairly similar in appearance over many years, though it has a number of details that help place it within a rough timeframe — including the slanted breast pocket and the low-set shoulder seam. It was most likely made sometime during the 1910s or 1920s.
It is made from a boldly striped wool cloth with alternating dark brown and light brown stripes, although the overall impression is dark brown. It features a shawl collar and cuffs in a contrasting light brown patterned wool cloth. At the transition to the cuffs there are decorative braidings. It has three toggle closures. The jacket has slanted front pockets as well as a slanted breast pocket. Around the pockets, along the closure, and at the transition to the cuffs there are decorative dark brown braidings.
As for the condition, the overall impression is good, although there are some minor imperfections in the cloth in the form of a few old, small moth holes. The heavy wool fabric is of such a character that these are not particularly conspicuous. There is also a small discolouration on the braiding at the front. Please study the photographs carefully and form your own impression of the condition.
