SWEDISH 1940s DARK GREY TWO PIECE SINGLE BREASTED SUIT. SIZE CA EU 54-56

 DESCRIPTION

This suit is of Swedish origin, tailored by AB G. Thulin in Örebro, central Sweden. It was most likely made sometime during the 1940s. The colour is a very dark grey, which to the eye appears almost black.

The jacket is single-breasted, fastening with three buttons. It features horizontal front pockets with flaps, a breast pocket, and a buttonhole on the left lapel. The back is plain and closed, without a vent. It is fully lined and has two interior pockets, one on each side. A couple of spare buttons are attached next to the left pocket.

The trousers have double pleats, slightly slanted front pockets, and a button fly. They are equipped with buttons for braces, but also feature what is known as a belt tunnel, allowing for a belt to be worn discreetly within a partially concealed channel along the waistband. Just to the right of the fly, there is a small coin pocket with flap – a very period-typical detail. On the back, there are two flap pockets with button closures. The trouser legs are finished with turn-ups.

The condition is overall good, with one significant exception: just behind the left front pocket flap on the jacket, there is a visible repair. Thanks to the dark colour of the fabric, this mend is relatively discreet, but upon closer inspection it is easy to spot. Naturally, the price has been adjusted accordingly.

Another point worth mentioning is that the jacket appears to have been let out at some point, which is faintly visible along the seam lines. One possible way to improve the appearance would be to revert the jacket to its original sizing. Both the repair and the seam alterations are clearly shown in the photos – please refer to them for a full understanding of the condition.

In modern sizing, this suit falls between a EU 54 (UK/US 44) and a EU 56 (UK/US 46). As mentioned, the jacket has been let out — reverting it would bring it back to a more standard EU 54 (UK/US 44). The trousers are relatively larger in the waist than the jacket, but the waist could be taken in for a better match. Please scroll down for full measurements and seam allowances.
