DESCRIPTION
This suit is of Swedish origin and was made bespoke in 1936 at J.T. Wikström’s tailoring workshop in Bredbyn, a small town in northern Sweden. The suit is made from a black wool fabric with a subtle twill structure.
The jacket features a period cut with peaked lapels and a relatively short length. It is single-breasted and fastens with two buttons. It has horizontal front pockets with flaps and a breast pocket. There is a buttonhole on the left lapel. At the back it is straight-cut with a single vent. The interior is fully lined and includes two inside pockets, one on each side.
The waistcoat is single-breasted and fastens with five buttons. It has four front pockets, two at chest height and two lower down. At the back there is a buckle for adjusting the fit. The waistcoat has been let out at some point, which is visible on the inside – on both sides there is a narrow panel in a different lining fabric.
The trousers have a single front pleat and vertical front pockets. They feature a button fly, and there are buttons on the outside of the waistband for braces. The trousers are fairly conservative and old-fashioned in their design, even taking their age into account. At the same time, they have turn-ups at the hems, which is certainly a period detail. At the back they have a so-called fishtail waistband, meaning the waistband is split at the centre back. On each side there are adjusters to regulate the waist size. There is also a jetted back pocket on the right-hand side.
Overall, the condition gives a good impression. However, upon closer inspection there are some minor flaws. These consist mainly of discolouration to the lining, which is not visible when the suit is worn. In addition, there are a couple of isolated marks on the exterior – one on the waistcoat and one on the trousers. There is also a small area of damage to the fabric on the back of the trousers. Please study the photographs and form your own view as to the condition.
SIZE
As this suit is tailor-made, the three pieces do not correspond to standard sizing. The jacket measures between an EU 44 and 46 (US/UK 34–36) in the chest. The waistcoat corresponds to an EU 48 (US/UK 38) when the back strap is fully let out. That the waistcoat is slightly larger than the jacket is logical, as it has been let out somewhat at the sides. The trousers correspond to an EU 50 (US/UK 40) when the side adjusters are fully extended. When tightened, the size aligns well with the other garments.
This suit would fit best someone who is approximately an EU 46 (US/UK 36). Please scroll down for the exact measurements and seam allowances.
