DESCRIPTION
This three-piece suit has no labels in the pockets, but on the hanger at the neck there is a tailor’s name, indicating that it is Swedish and made bespoke. It was most likely made sometime during the 1910s. The suit is crafted from a period-typical heavy black wool fabric.
The jacket fastens with a covered button and features horizontal front pockets with flaps. There is a buttonhole on the left lapel. Notably, it lacks a breast pocket—striking by today’s standards, but not uncommon at the time. The sleeve cuffs also have covered buttons. The back is straight and closed, with no vent. Inside, the jacket is fully lined and has a discreet inner pocket on the right side.
The waistcoat has a relatively low button stance and fastens with four covered buttons. It has a front pocket on each side. At the back, there is an adjustable strap to modify the fit. The interior is lined with a blue-striped cotton fabric.
The trousers have a flat front and vertical side seam pockets. They are equipped with buttons for braces on the outside of the waistband and a button fly. At the back, there is a pocket on each side and a central strap to adjust the waist. The trousers feature a so-called fishtail at the back, meaning the back seam is split at the top near the waistband—a standard detail for trousers of this era.
Regarding condition: the overall impression is very good considering that the suit is over 100 years old! Upon closer inspection, however, there are some minor flaws to be aware of if considering a purchase. These mainly involve discoloration of the lining, which is not visible when the suit is worn. There is also a small moth hole on the front of the trousers. Overall, the condition is still remarkable considering the suit’s age. Please study the photos carefully to form your own assessment of the condition.
SIZE
Measurements of the three pieces make it clear that the suit is custom-made and not a standard off-the-rack size. The jacket falls somewhere between an EU 46 (US/UK 36) and EU 48 (US/UK 38). The waistcoat corresponds to an EU 48 (US/UK 38). The trousers measure EU 52 (US/UK 42), but this includes the back strap fully open. When tightened, the trousers easily match the size of the other pieces. The waistcoat can, of course, also be adjusted to correspond to an EU 46 (US/UK 36).
