This exceptionally fine overcoat is of Swedish origin. It was bespoke-made in 1951 by a tailor named J.T. Wikström, based in Bredbyn, a small locality in northern Sweden. The coat is made from a substantial reddish-brown wool fabric with a distinct herringbone weave. It is constructed with flat-felled seams, which were very typical of the period. This means that the seam allowances are folded in and stitched down, reinforcing the structure and giving the seams a particularly clean and durable finish.
The coat is double-breasted, featuring three rows of buttons, two of which are functional. It has horizontal front pockets with flaps and a buttonhole on each lapel. At the back, there is a half-belt and a deep vent. The coat is fully lined and has two internal pockets, one on each side. One of these bears the tailor’s label, which reveals both the name of the tailor and the original client, as well as the date.
In terms of condition, it is remarkably well preserved. The only point worth noting is a few minor marks to the lining at the back. Naturally, these are not visible when the coat is worn. Overall, this is a truly fine overcoat, made in a colour we surprisingly rarely encounter here in Sweden. Please study the photographs carefully and form your own assessment of the condition.
SIZE
In terms of sizing, it corresponds to a modern EU 50 (UK/US 40). Please note that our size estimation assumes the coat is worn over a jacket; if worn without a jacket underneath, it would likely also fit someone slightly above an EU 50 (UK/US 40). Please scroll down for the exact measurements.
