DESCRIPTION
This unusual leisure suit is of Swedish origin, most likely made sometime in the 1930s. There are no labels, so we can't say who made it. However, when studying the interior, it’s clear that it is custom-tailored and not mass-produced. This type of suit with breeches was marketed as a practical sports suit, ideal for physical activities such as cycling. It is made from a thick, dark blue twill fabric. The jacket is single-breasted, with three closely spaced buttons. It has four external pockets: two large bellows-style front pockets, and two patch pocket breast pockets, all with buttons and flaps. There is a buttonhole on the left lapel. The jacket features a belted back and a vent. Inside, the jacket is fully lined, and it is evident that everything is hand-stitched. There is one inner pocket on the left side.
The jacket would also make an excellent statement piece as a odd jacket (a blazer worn as separates, rather than part of a suit).
The trousers, referred to at the time as “balloon pants,” are constructed similarly to riding trousers, with a lot of material in the thighs and a tight fit around the calves. The trousers have a flat front, and inside the waistband, there are buttons for suspenders. There are belt loops on the outside. They have a button fly, fastened at the top with a hook. On each side of the back, there are adjustment straps to customize the fit. The trousers also feature two rear pockets with piping, one on each side.
The condition of the suit is decent given its age, and it is fully wearable. The jacket is in good overall condition. However, the trousers show some small damage that should be taken into account if you’re considering purchasing it. There are some fabric damages near the button closure on the trousers, as well as a few discreet repairs. The lining also shows some wear. Please refer to the pictures to assess the overall condition of the suit.
SIZE
The jacket and trousers correspond to a modern EU size 46 (US/UK 36). One important consideration for this type of trousers is that the wearer’s calves must be able to pass through the narrowest part of the leg. This pair measures 16 cm across at the ankle, so the calf circumference should not exceed 32 cm. Please scroll down for exact measurements and seam allowances.
